Strong connections of locally clustered neurons in the upper-layer cortex underlie schizophrenia-related auditory deviance detection

Aug 20, 2026

We identified a cortical circuit in the auditory cortex that amplifies unexpected sounds, thereby generating prediction-error signals. This circuit was impaired in a mouse model of schizophrenia, accompanied by altered gene expression and synaptic abnormalities. These findings may advance understanding of the disease and the development of new biomarkers.
