Brain activity, disruption, and connectivity comparisons identify origins of human metacognition in other primates
May 26, 2026
We discovered the evolutionary origin of metacognition-driven future planning in macaque brains. Unlike humans, who depend on centralized processing in the anterior lateral prefrontal cortex, macaques recruited broader prefrontal networks to enable future planning. The findings suggest that more integrative and efficient processing in humans underlies human-unique intelligence.
