Apusomonad rhodopsins: A new family of ultraviolet to blue light–absorbing rhodopsin channels
Oct 23, 2025
We have discovered over ten novel microbial rhodopsins—named Apusomonad rhodopsins—from protists, and demonstrated their function as light-gated ion channels. Crucially, some of these uniquely respond to UV light, making them the first-ever UV-sensitive channelrhodopsins. Their distinct spectral properties open up new possibilities for the development of optogenetic tools.
